A CONSERVATION SUCCESS STORY … BALD EAGLES ARE BACK

I just heard the good news on CBS that the BALD EAGLES are returning to New York.

They are majestic, fierce and America’s national bird.

Back in the 70’s only two eagles remained in New York.  Pollution of New York’s rivers and the pesticide DDT brought the eagles to the brink of extinction. The eggshells were so thin they would break, and they weren’t reproducing. DDT was banned in 1972 and New York has been making a concerted effort to clean up NY rivers.

One park ranger, Rob Mastroianni has made it his mission since the 70’s to save the Bald Eagles from extinction and to bring them back to New York.

Now there are well over 1,000 eagles in NY and they are magnificent to observe.
